How I am going to make each part of my magazine.

How I am going to make each part of my magazine.

I will be using Photoshop by Adobe to make my title and also edit my photos that I have taken. This is because for editing photos it is the best software to use of it kind. Also I will be using it because compared to other editing programs I know how to use Photoshop, which means I will confortable with it.
Making my title on Photoshop is something I have not done before, but I want to do it on Photoshop so I learn something new and different. There for, learning this could help me in the future if I ever have to do anything that includes making tittles on Photoshop.

To make my front cover, content page and double page spread I will be using InDesign. InDesign is software that is new to me and I have only ever used ones before but I am looking forward to try something new and different.
One thing I am slightly worried about is because this is relatively new to me; I will end up taking ages trying to figure out how it all works. However I feel that using InDesign will help me for the future as well as this is because if I am asked to do anything that uses InDesign I will know what to do comfortable.

When doing the writing content for my magazine I will be doing it in the font Helvetica this is because it is a clear font that is easy to read also it is looks smart and neat.

Designing Magazine - Planning and Mind Map

NME Magazine Double Page Spread

NME Magazine Double Page Spread

The Title:
Upfront is the title for the double page spread with a smaller title underneath it saying what the page is about. Which I think is a really smart and clever idea to do because it means the reader does not have to take ages to find out what the double page includes.
The masthead has been done in bold black capital letters that go across the top of the page. The little title underneath the masthead is smaller and not bold but however it is still black and in capital letters.
Having the masthead with the little title underneath it is something that has inspired me for my own magazine.

Mis-en-scene:
The mis-en-scene has been split into 10 different pictures; 9 of them are on one page however number 10 is at the bottom of the second page.
Picture 9 of Girls Aloud they are all wearing exactly the same clothing, the body con pink dress that get more lighter at the bottom, however lighting does  enhances the fact that it get lighter at the bottom. The lighting round their faces real shows there bone structure especially on their jaws, by adding shadow underneath, although make up enhances this even more then lighting. On every one of the Girls Aloud members there make up is exactly the same, dark eye with pink on their eye lids. You could say that they are united as one because of how they are all wearing the same clothes.
In total contrast to Girls Aloud is picture 4 which is the group of school children that are also wearing the exactly the same clothes but unlike Girls Aloud they are not wear pink body con dresses they have conformed to wearing school uniform which is exactly the same.
Each one of these photos would have been taken in a different location for example, number 3 would have been taken in a fish market but image number 1 of Robbie Williams would have been taken in a studio these two places and people couldn’t be any more apart.

People:
There are so many different kinds of people in these pictures from a man selling fish for £1 at a market to the Prime Minister of Britain. Having such a broad range of people on their double page spread real makes sure that they hit their target market.
Each one of the artist have be presented appropriately for who they are for example, the Prime Minister is in a smart suit.
I feel that NME have defiantly hit their target market for this double page spread because the picture they have included are of people there audients know and relate. I also feel that this page relates to both genders because they have bands like the Killers but also singers like Carly Rae Jepson.

Written Content:
The written is only at the bottom on the first page but however the second page is just full of writing.
The way they have presented there writing doesn’t look really busy and crammed like it could if they didn’t organised it. What I real like about the way it has been presented is how the numbers are bold and clear against the writing. Also how the title for the picture are in colour to make them stand out against the white background and the black written.

Layout:
The layout of the double page has 9 photos on the first page of all the newest music this week and the second page is the writing up of each picture.
I really like the way they have presented the double page spread, how everything is very organised in the layout. Doing it like this is something I will defiantly taken inspiration from.

NME Magazine Content Page:

NME Magazine Content Page:
The Title:
It is fair to say that the title is very clear on NME contents page. One thing you can tell from the title is that NME is a weekly magazine; you can tell this from where it said ‘Inside This Week.’ Having it as a weekly magazine makes it a big contender to magazine like Q who are monthly. This is because where NME have the newest music and gigs weekly, Q have to do all of that for the whole month.
Another clear title is ‘My band and girlfriend are going to kill me’ this title is not as bold and in capitals like the masthead is but however it is a contrast to it masthead in the way it is done. This is because it all done in italics and the font is very fancy. I also found that is catches your eye a lot more than the masthead this could be for it being in the centre of the page so it the first thing you look at, however it could also be because of what it said that makes you just want to look and read, although it could stand out to you because the font that it is done in, it is so different to the others on the page that you just automatically look straight at it.
When doing my own magazine I want to use fonts and titles that stand out to the reader because I feel it will make the content page more interesting for them to read and look at.

Mis-en-scene:
The mis-en-scene on the content page is spread over 7 different images but in each photo they have brought their personality out. For example, Keith Lemon make up is very over the top in making him looked tanned but ended up going orange, however that is how the public know him to look like. On the other hand lighting would of really inhands this as well making him look even more over the top.
There is also a picture of Keith Richards who was the cover star on the front page. The picture has him bend down to the audients, wearing some colour clashing clothing. Having him on the front cover and having pictures of him on the contents page, you get the impression that there must be quite a big story about him.
The different photographs were all clearly taken in different locations. The image of Paul Weller with the blue background was clearly taken in a studio compared to Kevin Curran who is running down the street naked. This photo would have just been taken as it was happening unlike the other photo that would have been staged.

People:
The content page has a range of different people from band members, old rockstars to TV presenters. Doing this would give diversity to the different ages that read this magazine and also to the people that read it.
NME have hit their target audients with this contents page because it very clear that 16-19 year olds would enjoy reading and looking at this page. However even though they amid for both genders, being a girl and reading this it does feel that it for guys more than girls. This is mainly because of the pictures they have included they are all of males apart from one, and also the stories they have used may not interest a lot of girls.
When doing my own contents page I want to make sure it relates to both genders and my target market. To do this I will use pictures and stories that interest both genders.
Written Content:
The writing on the content page has been done by little quotes that artists have said in an interview, using unique and quirky quotes like this is a really good way to get the readers attention.
It is something that really inspired me when doing my own magazine.

Music Genre:
You get the impression that there loads of different genre of music in this edition of NME. This is because you have old rockstars to young band members all on the same page.
When doing my own magazine I will aim for younger singers and bands because that relates to my target market.

Layout:
The layout includes 7 different pictures that almost go in columns down the page with large numbers on the pictures. I really like how they have overlaid the numbers onto the photos. It is a really cool and smart way to let the readers know what page number each story is on. The house style has been used again on the content page, with the black writing but with the reds and oranges being brought in. This was a really imaginative way to use their house style without making it over the top. NME have also added a column of ‘plus,’ this is all the other cool things they have also included in this edition of the magazine.
When designing my own content page I intend to have a similar layout to NME with my own twist to it.

NME Magazine Front Cover

NME Magazine Front Cover

The Title:
NME title is very clear at the top left hand corner and also another clear title is No
ël Satisfaction. This title is not a big as the masthead but however it is very prominent. Both titles have been done to catch peoples eyes, they have done this by putting them in clear bold white writing, which is one of the main colours in NME house style. NME have also put all the writing down the left hand side, which draws your eye down that side of the page.
Doing this makes it very clear for the reader to know exactly what this edition of NME includes.

Mis-en-Scene:
The cover star is Keith Richards who was a member of the Rolling Stones in the 1960’s. Having Keith Richards as the cover star shows diversity in ages and people who read this magazine. The make up that has been used is not obvious at all it just been used to inhands little features on his face for example, his jaw. However lighting plays a large part in this as well, it .is going onto his forehead and also down his nose but this jaw and top part of his neck have been put into shadow making them more prominent. In contrast to the dark shadows on this neck he also is wearing sunglasses, which give him more of an edgier look and makes him look more ‘gangster.’ I feel it is more of this look because of him wearing sunglasses you cannot see his eyes, which some people could find quite intimidating.
His blue shirt real stands out against the black background and also how it clashes with the red writing. Doing this make his clothes stand out on the cover and not just him.
This photo was most likely to be taken in a studio because then they could get the perfect image that they want.

People:
The target market for this magazine is 16-19 years old plus of both genders, I believe this because they are the age of most people that want to go to gigs and plus want to know the newest music out there right know. However I do feel that older people will read this magazine as well because of the type of music they include. Plus having Keith Richards as the cover star backs this theory up as he is amid for older people and also maybe young adults.
When doing my own magazine I will amid to go for the audients of 16-19 years old as well but unlike NME I will have a cover star that relates to my readers more.

Written Content:
The content on the front cover is just little short sentences that give clues about what is in the magazine for example, it said about interviews then list all the interviews they are doing and the people they are doing them with.
On my front cover when doing my own magazine, I will defiantly do something along these lines because it looks really good and also shows the readers exactly what they want to read about.

Music Genre:
From the front cover you get the impression that NME is amid more towards rock and edgy music. This is because they have an old rockstar and also the interviews they have done tend to be with rock influents artist.

Layout:
The layout of this cover page has Keith Richards as the main cover star then writing and text going mainly down the left hand side. Having it like this makes it very clear for the reader to know what they are looking for.
The house style is very clear it is, red and white, this theme goes through NME magazine. I feel that using the colour red is very appropriate for this genre of music magazine. This is because I feel red is quite a rocky and edgy colour just like the music that NME include in there magazine.

Different Music Magazine Research

Q Magazine Content Page:

Q Magazine Content Page:

The Title:
The title saying contents goes straight across the center of the page double page spread. The title is done in bold white writing that relates to the house style of the magazine but also takes up most of the magazine. Having the title like this makes the reader know exactly what is going on also what the page is about. The way Q have put the music artist behind the title is a very smart idea because it makes the page more interesting and also relate to what the magazine is about plus interesing to it target audience of this magazine.
When designing my own contents page for my magazine I will defiantly take inspiration from the way Q have done there’s. This is because it not like a normal contents page, they have double page there and used bold clear writing along with interesting picture.

Mis-en-scene:
The mis-en-scene in the main picture across the center of the page is shows quite clearly there make up and what they are wearing. The make up that each artist is wearing really brings out there features and just covers any parts that don’t want to be seen also being enhances by the lighting. Key lighting onto their faces makes them stand out against the white wall behind them. However this lighting is not just on there faces, you see this on the women artist Emeli Sande she has some light coming down from her face onto her clothing and hand. Having these little touches of light coming down makes the image balance so all the light doesn’t just go onto there faces.
What the artist are wearing really relate to them and there personality. You can really see this in Al Murray and what he is wearing. The clothing relates to his popular comedy show that he used to do and that people know and love him form. His clothing has become quite iconic to his show and also himself, there for to see him on TV or in a magazine not wearing these clothes just seems slightly odd.

This is also portrayed in Emeli Sande and in what she is wearing, this is because you get the impression she is a girly girl but with a slight modern twist which is shown in this picture of her. The skirt and jumper she is wearing is very flattering to her and something that you would think and defiantly see her wearing.
The photo was probably taking place in a studio to make sure that they got the best picture they possibly could. Also so they could have the white backdrop, having the white backdrop make the artist stand out and really sets of the photo.

People:
The content page is really amid for the kind of people that will be reading this magazine, this is because of the different kinds of artist that they have used and included. Even though you have the large main photo with well know celebrates you also have the Q Reviews that include an image of Ke$ha. Having a young well know American on the content page compared to the other artist British artist really shows how Q have such a broad range of music in there magazine and that they are not just going for one type of music. Having this means they appeals to loads of different kinds of people, this I would love to use in my magazine as well, so not just have one genre.

Written Content:
The written on the content page is done in little punchy sentence under main titles. The main titles are put into coloured boxes with bold white writing, which all relate to Q house style. All the main titles is something that the readers what to read about; Cover Story, Features and Regulars. They also have a Q review this month of all the albums from that month and also about different artist this is down the side in it own separate column. You can tell this from the content page from just little sentence that just give the key information you need to know for what you are looking for. On my content page I defiantly would look to do something like this because it look really good and, it is quick and easy to see what you want to look at.

Music Genre:
You can tell from looking at the content page that Q amid for a range of different music genre. This is because you have artists like Plan B compared to the artist Ke$ha on the same page and also how they have older singer as well. What I did find on this content page is that they don’t just have artist they have Al Murray that is a comedian and doesn’t have anything to do with music, however this shows that the magazine has diversity with in it.

Layout:
The layout of these double pages is neat and very clear, of what is it is. The title goes straight across the page and follows the house style very clearly with it being white. The writing towards the bottom of the page is also done in the house style with the main titles being in the coloured boxes. What I like about the this content page is how everything has it place with the main picture and title being at the top of the page, then the writing across the bottom of the page and then the Q reviews being in it own separately. Having it like this make it very clear and also even though there is a lot on the page it doesn’t look really crammed and busy.
